Work Hard. Play Hard.
Be Involved.
Community participation helps youth become empathetic citizens who could potentially continue similar work when they become adults. Additionally, youth who give back to their communities develop leadership skills, learn the importance of helping, and gain work experience.
Change.
Youth and community development work has its historical roots in informal education. Values and principle are a central and integral part of youth and community development work and how we should practice. As practitioners of informal education, the work that we do is about making a difference to the lives of people and their communities. At the heart of this is the commitment to social justice and change. Central to the philosophy of youth and community development work is an understanding and commitment to anti-oppressive practices.
Growth.
Youth can connect with diverse groups of people in their communities through volunteering and outreach. This gives them a better understanding of how a community is made up of people with different beliefs and needs.
“At the banquet table of nature, there are no reserved seats. You get what you can take, and you keep what you can hold. If you can’t take anything, you won’t get anything, and if you can’t hold anything, you won’t keep anything. And you can’t take anything without organization.”
— A. Philip Randolph
“We need in every bay and community a group of angelic troublemakers.”
— Bayard Rustin
One of the first things I think young people, especially nowadays, should learn is how to see for yourself and listen for yourself and think for yourself. Then you can come to an intelligent decision for yourself.— Malcolm X
“I was able to meet some very strong sisters in the movement and together, we nurtured one another. Among us, the mentoring process was one of sharing as opposed to following—and of being there for each other when times got hard and hot. As only those of us who were doing it could understand, we could hold each other up without having to say one spoken word. “
