North Carolina will be a Political Hotbed in 2024
North Carolina is looking like a political hot ground in 2024. The citizens of the state care about the issues that affect their day to day life, so an attempt by any party to grab a supermajority would be concerning. Such policies that have been recently enacted, such as the 12- week ban on abortion despite a veto by the State Governor, and a school voucher plan that allows parents to use public money to pay for private schools has gained the attention of Voters within the State. 57 percent of the state voted to keep the previous Abortion law, which allowed abortions up to 20 weeks.
With Legislators planning rewrite voting laws in ways that advantage them, this can also give either party an advantage when it comes to drawing favorable state and congressional districts. This puts the Election Integrity in a state of flux, certainly when one or the other party tries to do anything in a democracy to keep power. This is also an attack on citizens Voting Rights, as one party wielding more power over voting and elections is a problem within a democracy. With bills being written such as the Voter ID law, which in 2016 was deemed unconstitutional as it seemingly targeted the African American Vote. These Voter ID bills have continued within the state, and they are attempts at Voter Suppression, coming off as discriminatory laws and anti-democratic, attacks against the community of color. There have also been attempts to eliminate Same Day Registration, which is big for the community of color, as well as making it harder to vote by mailing in, which was a big help for those Elder people who couldn't make it to the polls. More than 157,000 thousand people voted by mail within the state.
There also been an influx of outside influences trying to sway the opinion of the parties and helping to form policy. A 2017 law aiming to change the State's Election Board was also struck down, but a new effort has a risen within the Legislation. The new current bill will most certainly cause a deadlock on many major elections, which has alarmed election officials. This move could cause the state board to deadlock over the election of the Governor, including National Elections such as the Presidential Election. A Deadlock could potentially lead to the courts getting involved, and the courts could be leaning in favor of one party or another.
